Pinehurst is Ready for the Open

The Village of Pinehurst is really buzzing with excitement. There are people everywhere, but this small village is set-up well to handle the traffic. All of the yards near Pinehurst No. 2 are roped off to keep people from parking where they should not. Over 100 NC State Troopers descended upon Pinehurst today and are at every nearly every major intersection in the village. Quite a major event. I’ve got 2 days of pictures posted at my website:

US Open website at iSportsLinks.com

The local newspaper, The Pilot, gave out a “Birdie” and a “Bogey” today.

Birdie By Paul Jett, superintendent of Pinehurst No. 2, for treating Donald Ross’ masterpiece like a newborn baby. For a while there, the rough didn’t look too tough. Butt Jett and his able crew were said to have slipped out onto the course in the middle of the night to give it a bottle and burp it. Now there’s so much rough that they’ll need a hay baler to tame it. Way to go, Paul. We never doubted your ability to grow the green stuff.

Bogey By Tiger Woods, the world’s second-ranked golfer for tossing his golf glove to Bradley Chandler, a 13-year-old Pinehurst resident, after his recent practice round on Pinehurst No. 2. Woods would have earned a birdie for this thoughtful act had he not copped an attitude with young Chandler, who hawks The Pilot in the village. Instead, we’re issuing Woods a two-stoke penalty for his arrogance. When Bradley asked Tiger to sign the glove, the two-time U.S. Open champ blew past the youngster and said, “Don’t get greedy.” Way to endear yourself to the community, Tiger.

I’ll be able to test both of the above. I’ll report on the rough tomorrow and the conditions of the greens, etc. I’ll also report on the attitude of the golfers. The guidelines for the tournament state:

Autographs – Spectators should keep in mind that the players’ first responsibility during the U.S. Open week is to compete for the national championship. For this reason, a “no autograph” policy is in effect throughout the Championship week. Spectators should not approach a player for an autograph from the time up to and including the player’s completion of his round, including the time when the player is at the Practice Range and Practice Green or in route to his first tee. This policy applies to Practice Rounds as well as Championship Rounds.

I guess they are able to sign after the round? I was hoping my 9 year old could get a few autographs during the practice rounds for a keepsake of the tournament; we’ll see how things go.

The family played a warm-up 9 holes today at a little par 3 course with artificial tees and greens. The holes range from 72 – 134 yards, a perfect warm-up. The artificial greens, a special type of outside carpet, hold the shots surprisingly well. My 9 year old daughter Ellie, got a legitimate Birdie, her first, on the 79yard #8. The hole is essentially on the side of a hill leading to a pond. She hit her drive along the hill about 50 yards. Her second shot with a 9 iron carried the slope of the hill above the green. Dave (my brother in-law) and I were above the green, watching as the ball followed the slope of the hill, rolled on the green, and slowly creped towards the hole, finding the bottom of the cup. It was amazing! Her tee shot and the hole are posted on the site.

We’ve decided to get up at 6am tomorrow and see who is teeing off early. I’ve got a 2GB card in the digital camera and can take about 800 photos at 3072x2048 resolution thanks to my other brother-in-law Tom and my poor travel planning. We were about 30 miles from home when we realized that we had forgotten our camera. We were prepared to purchase one, but Tom lent us his Canon EOS digital camera. It is a bit of trouble to haul around, very heavy, but it takes fantastic pictures.
